Evangelion FanFic!

Tennative title: "Not Without My Shinji"

After a few weeks of mulling it over, I finally realized something very interesting about Evangelion:

Yui Ikari was the first true Eva test pilot. On the first test synchronization though, she was absorbed into Unit 01, where she resides until 2014 when Shinji comes along.

The thing that puzzles me is, what has she been doing all of this time? Has she been studying the EVA from the inside out? Is she desperately trying to get out of the EVA? Or does she reside there of her own free will in order to protect her son, which she knew had the potential to pilot her creation? These questions are the whole basis of the brand new fanfic that I am writing.
